Treatment of Chiari Malformation

علاج حالات تشوه كياري – Chiari Malformation

Chiari Malformation is a rare condition in which part of the cerebellum (the back part of the brain) descends downward into the spinal canal. This can cause pressure on the brainstem and spinal cord and affect the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, leading to a range of symptoms.

Common Symptoms:

  • Recurrent headaches that worsen with coughing or bending.

  • Dizziness or imbalance.

  • Numbness or weakness in the limbs.

  • Difficulty swallowing or speaking in some cases.

  • Vision or concentration problems.

How is it diagnosed?

  • Careful clinical examination.

  • MRI of the brain and neck to determine the degree of cerebellar descent and its effect on cerebrospinal fluid flow.

Treatment Methods:

Conservative treatment: For mild cases that do not cause severe symptoms, the doctor may recommend observation and medications to relieve symptoms.

Surgical treatment (Posterior Fossa Decompression):

For cases causing significant symptoms or complications, a precise surgery is performed to enlarge the opening at the base of the skull and relieve pressure on the brain and spinal cord, which helps to:

  • Reduce headaches and pain.

  • Improve balance and movement.

  • Restore normal cerebrospinal fluid flow.
